ParticipantThere are a couple of horse farming books that might be better known here in the NorthWest. Both of them discuss horse farming here on the Palouse (big hitches pulling ground drive combines over steep terrain). The first one is “The Draft Horse Interlude” (or maybe just the horse interlude) and was written by T.B. Keith. Lots of great photos – even has the pay scale for guys working on the combine and there were a few.
The second book is more of a story book that follows a guy getting his first team of Clydes during this same horse farming era. It brings up practices like overwintering horses on the straw stacks left over where the stationary thresher had been …. This book was written by a local author but is still a good read – Called “Plodding Princes of the Palouse” – a little cutesy title but fun to read.
