ParticipantHere I am cutting a big soft maple last winter. We were making a 10 acre clearing in an area badly damaged by the 2009 ice storm. By clear cutting we are not only removing all trees over 1″ as well as damaged and poor quality trees but the dense sapling understory that will result is great habitat for all sorts of critters. I know I yelled timber as an after thought, and honestly I was hoping to miss the little oak I tipped over to the right. Guess that’s what happens when you run a chainsaw and hold a camera phone at the same time.
Trees were removed with a skidder then I used my steer to gather smaller debris into brush piles. (they are to young and small to pull big trees)
