On January 18, 2014 the folks at Yale Forest put on a workshop for landowners to show how draft animals and onsite milling can be utilized to meet a landowners needs and objectives. My partner Sam and I brought a pair of Percherons and a pair of Milking Shorthorns to show how these animals can meet a small landowners forest management needs. This workshop drew about 60 landowners that were very appreciative and full of good questions. We really tried to sell the idea that the real value in using draft animals is what we leave behind in the forest, the improvement that we can bring to a wood lot, and I think that a lot of people got it. We choked the bandsaw mill up rather fast and everyone went home with a college student made box of green pine. We brought on home last year and let is sit for a long time to dry, it now houses a few years worth of Small Farmers Journals.

It was a great group to talk to and we had fun educating folks about our animals, what they are capable of and how we care for them. The “what are their names factor was rather low” so score one for Yale and another great landowner educational workshop.

Here are a few pictures: I will try to add some later, I can’t seem to get any to attach even after reducing the size of them.
