ParticipantMs. Jennifer,
I am so sorry to hear this for you, it is hard to lose one like that she sounds like a dandy. You will be in my families prayers tonight for sure. Those little cattle dogs sure have a way of getting to you , like you said they are devoted to a fault at times. Take Care and I hope you get another good one soon. Taylor JohnsonTaylorJohnson
ParticipantI had two different mules that would stomp and bite a bear when it was dead on the ground. It was kind of funny because the guys that did not know the mules well were scared of them after seeing this happen ( it was a true display of power how mean a mule could be ) . Before they seen them act this way they were just all over petting them feeding them then they would see them grab a dead bear by the neck and shake it and stomp it they would be a little leery. I would have to get them to come back over and play with them again and see that they were good boys not killers 🙂 . Those mules names were Buck and Peewee , they were the reason at least 10 guys I know bought and still have mules. My horses are not afraid of coyotes one bit but when the wolves start to hole they pay attention and get real close to the house , it is like they know that those are bad news animals. Taylor Johnson

ParticipantSimon ,
I have a friend that has some fell terriers from over your way , great little dogs. I have Airedales for my main dogs, I use them to hunt just about every thing under the sun. They are some of the most useful animals I have ever seen. I train them all to a mega whistle ( reaches about 1.5 miles) so they will come back to me if I need them to. I tree coon, bear, cats , every thing plus I have even tracked wounded animals with them. I also pull fire wood to the house with them in a sled . They are a protective dog that is good with the kids. Airedales are a very versatile dog. We also have some Jack Russell’s that will get after about every thing to . My family has raised a line of English tick hounds for about 30 years now and my Dad is a full time dog trainer and handler, he raises a line of walker hounds . I use to have at least 20 hound but they are a specialty dog and I prefer the jack of all trades type dogs. Up until about a month ago I also had Mountain Curs , also very versatile. It always interest me what people are using in different parts of the world. I for the most part hunt my dogs but I love to watch a good cow dog work. ParticipantLike I said in my first post I was not disagreeing with Neil even , it was that at that point a pad would not fit and the way the collar was riding in the pic was a little mis leading . Js2743 That is how the collar fits now with a pad, this week was the first it would fit with a pad. If this collar starts to bother my horse I will not use it. I have seen some pretty rough stuff used in the woods as far as collars , harnesses and what not. I am not one of those guys.
I am not interested in bickering and arguing on here . If Neil of any one else would put up a vid on fitting a collar or different kinds of collars than I am sure I would learn something buy it and once again it would be appreciated . I for sure don’t now every thing in fact in the big scheme of things I know very little. I am just a logger that is it. I have had a lot of mules and some horses and I have found a way to make my living with animals and that is all I care. Once again any vids would be appreciated, in fact Neil if you have any logging vids post those I would like to see them . I am sure there is something to be learned by them to. Carl I did not come on here to start trouble so for what it is worth I apologize to you and any one else on here that I have troubled in any way . I could not see the fit of the collars in the vid that was not a poke at all and I meant it when I said I was sure that they were right on as far as fit goes, not a jab just a comment. ParticipantIRA,
I worked with a couple of friends that were from PA for about a year and a half may be two. They always talked about the Cherry out there , said it was something to see. Years ago when I was a kid my Dad went out there to look at a private job for us to log but nothing ever came of it but a good road trip. They also talked a little about the hunting to manly deer. I was going to take one of them out there to get some of his stuff but another family happend to be comming back this way so I did not have to go. We cut some Cherry down in southern MN when we worked together but it was not much compared to what they we use to. If I ever get out that way I will for sure get in contact with and let you know. ParticipantNeil,
Look and my first response to your post ( I do have a pad for that collar but it is not as big as that pic makes it look, in fact until he slims down a bit the pad makes it to tight. Looking at that pic it sure looks big though. Taylor Johnson ) . I did not even disagree with you. I explained the collar and its situation. Then some one else told me again that the collar was to big. I could see were it was heading as to the nature of these boards so I tried to head it off. I do not doubt your knowledge as a teamster and I am sure you are a well of knowledge with any thing to do with horses. My response to the first post was very reasonable . So if you don’t want to share your knowledge with me direct then that is your choice and I will take this time right know to thank you for your videos and the info that you share on here , so thanks.
These board are a good tool but they are also what is wrong with the world. every body keeps there distance and there is know real personal conversation ( if there is it take years to develop ) . If we were at an auction or at a landing then the conversations would be much different I suspect. Tone of voice and posture are a big part in communication, these board have none of that. Neil if I were some place were you were talking horses you might not know I was there because I would probably just listen unless I was asked a ? I am not a disrespectful person on any level but I will not put some one on a pedestal . To put some one on a pedestal is not even far to the person. If you ask me something I will answer like I did in my first response. My answers my sound short at times but that is not my motive at all, I might be one of the most polite and quite people you will ever meet, that is what I try to be. As far as people with motives of being condescending and putting people down well It is a poor way to be, if that is not your motive than don’t worry . As far as these Pi$$ing contest that I was referring to well people should be careful who they get into one with because they might just get drowned. Taylor Johnson
PS. Neil thanks again for your videos and the info you share on here, I enjoy them very much. And i cant see the fit on the collars in the video or pics but I am sure they are right on. Take careTaylorJohnson
ParticipantWEllcome to the board, I hope to get to PA some day to hunt coon with a friend out there. It sound like good country and I hear they have some of the best hard wood in the country. Taylor Johnson

ParticipantThe harness had been on that horse about 2 minutes at the point of this pic. there were a lot of adjustment and tweaking that went on. I had to make some more holes in the bottom strap and like I said the collar is a little big but not big enough to put a pad in at this point. Don’t worry boys I ain’t going to junk my own horse by working him in a collar that will lay him up, this is all I do this is how I make my living this is all I do. I put this on him to take a quick pic so I could show the man I got him from his new gear, that is it. It seem to me that people get into a pissing contest on here all the time to see who knows the most about horses , training , Tacking up and what not. There is a lot to be learned here for sure and that is why I am here but this is not my first horse and I do know how to fit a collar and I will keep my horses best interest in mind. There are times when every thing is not perfect for me or om horses. One spring I worked for a week with a collar that was to big and holes in my boots you could stick 2 fingers in so I guess you can say we both had poor gear but we survived and bought knew stuff once we had a few checks coming in. I am not a parade man I don’t do any seminars but I do log with my horses about 6 days a week . I am the fifth generation of person to make a living with horses in my family . I have spent a lot of time and money to travel and learn what I can when ever I can about horses and dogs. So if you want to critique the pic I guess you can but you are going on a couple of pics of some gear that has been on a horse for a matter of minutes. I did not post these pic and say hay boys what do you think of the way this collar fits ain’t it the best , no I did not . I just put the only pics up I had of my horse because i like him and was glad to get a knew harness that is it. Hell we can all set on here and compare who’s dads the toughest and who can run the fastest and jump the farthest , I mean if you really want to wast the time on all of that then lets do it because that is about as much meaning a lot of the stuff I have read on here amounts to. To many times some one post a comment or what ever and gets nit picked for doing it . Guys I won’t play these games at all so don’t even start with me I am a friendly person but if you want to get into a pissing contest don’t bother I have know time for it at all. Taylor Johnson

ParticipantJenifer,
Time will tell if it is final or not but I sure think t will be because in this gated community there are many , many white tailed deer. I think that what we pulled will come back to some extent but when they do I hope the deer will do the part. The chain was just a regular skidding chain with slip hooks on each end. I would hook it up high and then put a twist on it partly to keep the chain from slipping but it also seemed to help twist the tree from the ground especially when hooked near the stump.
I have use my team to do a lot of this type of work . I have pulled every thing from scrub oak to soft maple wile building trail for people. It works very good and after you skid some logs down the trail the divots in the ground fill right in and it levels right out. I even use the team to pull shrubs out of a garden next to a house. There were a bunch of under ground irrigation pipes and a sprinkler system to work around so it would have been hard to get a tractor into them. I had to flag the sprinklers so I could avoid them . Most of this took place in an area were the cheaper house ran about 1.5 million ( all Dr.s and Med pros from the Mayo clinic in Rodchester MN. Taylor JohnsonTaylorJohnson
ParticipantJenifer,
That buck thorn is a mess, I worked a wood lot with a lot of that in it. My job was to pull it out by the roots and then pile it in a field. I would hook my team up high on the buck thorn and then pull it almost out of the ground ( the bigger ones I am talking , roots half in half out of the ground. ) then I would re hook it close to the ground take a little different angle with the team and pop them the rest of the way out of the ground. I would skid 4 or 5 in a pile put a rapper chain around them and skid them out of the wood lot to the field. I do not know if they chipped them or burned them. Taylor JohnsonTaylorJohnson
ParticipantI think that any thing that gets said on these board needs to be taken with a grane of salt, it is very easy to come off sounding different than you might mean to. Taylor Johnson
