It is all good know matter what I have to do . In most ways I have never had it so good in my life. In fact if I could make a deal with God and have this be my version of Heaven and I could freeze my life right here I would do it ,, well in a few day once the Baby is here. Even working a lot for a little I cant complain the Wife and Kids are all healthy I have 4 good dogs and a very nice team. My mom use to say if money is your only problem then you don’t have a problem you just have to figure out how to get some of it. Sometimes that is half the fun.
    Miss Loggers Wife,
Your boy sounds like mine . Sullivan is 2 years old on Saturday and is ,, well like you said a 32lb wrecking ball. He keeps his mama on the move. He is going to hollow ween as a logger ( if you can believe that ) .
I get blessing thrown at me all the time so much so that I cant even believe it my self sometimes. Life is good with a few kinks in the mix once in a wile. Taylor Johnson

Hey Scott it was a good visit for sure. Ya that guy I am talking about is my cousins best friend and those two use to work for me sometimes . They were quit a pair and fun to watch. They were best friends but my cousin and him would get into about 2 or 3 scraps a week. My cousin would always win and in 5 minutes its like it never happened. They competed in every thing running , chain saw races, who could cut the most in one day, wrestling, rock throwing , ax throwing , pistil shooting, you name it they would have a contest and at the end many times it would end in a fist fight. They were and still are best friends,,, what a couple of clowns not the type of boys you take to town a hole lot ya know what I mean. They were and are both pretty fare loggers but my cousin did lose an arm in a logging accident so he is limited but still works a crew and runs an old iron mule forwarder has a small saw that he cuts fire wood with .
Joshua, I am looking forward to pic of your little guys working , I think it sounds like fun and I bet you will be able to get a lot done. If you could put up a pic of them even if they are not working I would just like to see them. And hey if those Dr.s tell you that you cant use your common sense but don’t let them keep you down , sometimes they can hurt you worse than the injuries. Taylor Johnson

I don’t like skidding 8′ wood either it will knock your brains out quick fast and in a hurry. If I were going to skid 8′ wood I would be running longer lines so I was well away from the log, then you would have to watch your horses. I knew a guy once that got leveled after my cousin told him to get longer line, stick of aspen hit a stub came up and drove him face first into the ground. He jumped up all scared like people do when they get knocked stupid but knot killed, looked around to see if the world was still there and went on his way to the landing. He got longer lines after that. Taylor Johnson

Depending on the size of loads you are taking out will matter a lot . People would be surprised at what you can get done with a small horse. I have a friend that had a pony that was a pulling machine . One day it started to rain and he had a wagon full of hay in the yard . All that was harnessed was that little shaggy pony so he thought well I will try . That little pony pulled it into the shed he said he was really surprised. He sold him to an English guy that was into horse pulls. The friend that owners him is a harness maker so he has some nice gear for even the little ones.
I think a lot of people that have horses could get by with a lot smaller horses than they have. Less feed most of the time they have good feet . If you make an animal be use full they will be worth having. I wont even own a dog that don’t work , not that I don’t like a pet ( all my animals I love ) but they have to earn there keep . Hey Scott thanks man I can hardly wait it will be my third kid in four years. At the end like this it seems to take forever but I know the day is near. I might drop you and E mail and pick your brain a bit about this loader. I don’t want to sell it ether it really is a nice loader but I might. Taylor Johnson

All labor is profitable but idle chatter will lead you to poverty. So do what you have to do .
I am not getting rich but I am by the grace of God making it. The Lyme’s disease I had this summer hurt me worse than the low pay wood did. It is tough getting going again for sure but I will do what I have to do no honest job is a shame to me . Taylor Johnson

    Mr. Simon,
This is know good I hate to hear this for you. I hope things turn around so you can keep doing what you do. You have some fine looking horses and I can tell you love your trade so hang in there my friend . I think,,, well I know there are a lot of loggers in the same boat as you right now even over here. I know guys that have been logging there hole lives and are now getting out and looking for town jobs. It is a pity for sure. Taylor Johnson

George after I read what I wrote I thought it might be hard to follow, so I will try again and probably confuse every one more the second time around LOL. Basically what I would do is fell a tree and measure out all the sticks in the tree wile I was limbing it out. after I had a few down I would make my cuts so I could pull them up together with my cart into bunches to haul out of the bush. It just worked out that a lot of the time I would cut a 16′ , then cut the last 2 sticks off and pull them up to the first and second 16′ logs. Some of them were cut into 10′ ,most of the time just the but cut, then a 16′ ,and so on I would then take all that I could handle( by hand that is ) and pull it up to the first 16′ so sometimes I would have 3 16′ logs together and a ten that I could hook with one chain . When I hook and go the logs pull together in line and I can pull up to my next drag and do the same. If it worked out well I could un- hook one of the chains and re hook the hole load with one chain pull up and get another log or logs . I don’t know if this is making any since or not, if not you can sure give me a call if you want and we can talk some logging I might be able to explain it better on the phone ( or may bey not LOL ) . I usually only carry 2 chains with me and when I hook these drags like this I am hooking at the small end of the but cut ,then running the loose chain around the next log or logs if they are bunched with it past the hooked but cut. Wrap the chain ones and it is ready to haul out of the woods. Taylor Johnson

This is what I posted on another site about this cart being a copy .
Boys I don’t know were this is going but if I had the planes and blue prints , a ware house full of steel and a fully equipment shop I could not build or duplicate any thing.
Todd ( the man that built my cart ) from my understanding designed this cart him self and it is nice. I have never seen a Forestry brand cart in person but I have seen them in pics. I have a friend that has a Farmer brown cart down in southern MN and i have seen it and it is a dandy to but I have only seen it one day out of the last 2 or 3 years and that day it was about 26 bellow and I did not study it much . Like I said I could have pics , planes, steel, welder , all of that and could not duplicate a piece of equipment . I know when my buddy seen mine ( the one that owns the farmer brown cart ) and watched me use it he had opinion’s on what he liked and disliked compared to mine and I think mine is much heavier built than the forestry brand cart. They are a simple machine and most would have to be pretty close to the other just to work well as far as balance and what not goes. But I don’t know if some one is saying that I copied a forestry or a farmer brown cart but I can tell you I would have about as much chance of that as putting the moon in my pocket.
It is a long story about how I ended up making the trade , it started with fire wood for his mom and dad and ended with a diesel truck,, I got a cart and a gas power Air compressor so I am happy plus got to know a darn good man and made a good friend out of it . I am happy with the cart , the trade , and the buddy I have made. Taylor Johnson
Jason , I am not saying this is what you are saying I am just letting every one know how i got the cart. You would have to talk to the man that builds them to talk specs and details about the design. Tim did not like the way my evener hooks up on my cart but he did like the hight on mine , he said mine has a wider stance to, with the wide tires it is much wider. He did not like my seat compared to his cart he did like my carts balance and the floor . So like I said I do not know the details or specs but I know that I like my cart.
Before I cut my arm up bad I was talking to Farmer Brown about getting a cart from him, but after the injury the money was not there . If it were not for Todd being willing to trade with me I would not have this one. I would not steal form any one not even and idea. Because ford made a car does that mean Chevy stole there idea by making a car. The way I look at it Farmer Brown is like the Henry Ford of the horse logging community and if people are going to build something that works it will be close to his or one of the other types of carts out there. Mr. Brown made more since to me than a lot of people as far as putting out wood with horses. The longer I do this the more since he makes about some of the things he said and ideas he had. Down the line I will be doing it the way he does it . I think he is on the money with his operation, I might not do it exactly like him but it will be more like his than most . That might not be the right way to do it for every region but it will work for mine. So in a way I will be copying him but if you are doing things the right way people are going to do things like you . His method would not work well for Tim in his area or it might not work in some other areas of the country .
For most horse loggers it would be impossible to travel 10 or 12 hours to get a cart or any equipment for that matter. I know I could not, most people making a living with horses will have to buy equipment and supplies from the area they live in . Todd lives 2.5 hours from me and Mr. Brown lives in NY. If Mr. Brown lived 2 hours from me he would be sick of swapping with me by now and might give me a cart to leave him alone ( I am a fine trader of goods lol ) . When these markets come back and money is a little easier to come by I will be doing a little traveling and hope to meet some of you on this board and go to some of the events but right now all I do is work, work and a little more work ( well not right this minute like I said I am getting over a nasty case of Lyme’s )

If you look at walking plows , they are all pretty close in looks but are they all a copy of one another ? Same with regular fore carts. Just some thoughts on this hole thing. Taylor Johnson
