Thanks for the photos, Carl. I’ll try to figure out dimensions of a donkey-sized bob. Thank you also, for everyone here w/ their info on the different situational uses for the bobs/scoots = this is exactly the sort of info needed by neophytes such as myself, that I find here at DAP.

Has anyone ever dealt w/ Sandhills Preservation? They’re located in Iowa and sell heritage day-olds. Was thinking of dealing w/ them, and wondered if anyone has done so, before.

My driving mentor sold me a collar w/ a collar pad for my two (we both have donkeys), said the pad was so I could use the collar on both until I could get another one…to use it to adjust the fit – if I don’t need it, don’t use it, as it’ll really heat them up (we get triple-digits by June, around here). This is with our donkeys, don’t know if its different w/ mules and horses or other areas.

I’ve been thinking about getting buckeyes, as well…seem like good fit for pasture. Where did you get the chicks/eggs?

Did someone mention a wee bit of piracy?
Hey – the Pirate-Farmer is ALWAYS up for that! 😉

I’ve always been of the idea to obey those laws that are just and common-sense; and I tend to ignore those that aren’t. There’s a risk and attendant possible penalties as a price to pay, but freedom tastes so doggone good, I don’t mind so much if/when the check comes due.
Personally, I don’t much see the point of waiting to see if the government will “grant” me the freedoms to farm and market food in the logical ways mentioned here.

    Erik ~
    Peace, Brother.
I’m actually agreeing w/ you = we need to speak up now, while we still can, or find ourselves in their situation.

    As a side-point:
In 1983, I was in a bar in Apache Junction, AZ. I ended up in a confrontation w/ the bar owner and his 2 “pet” sherriff’s deputies – they had a scam going wherein they rolled the “strays” that wandered in, looking like they had money…the cops had guns; I had knives.
    I won.
However, it’s inadvisible to get into it w/ the barowner, when 34 local patrons are in the bar – long and short of it, I was charged w/ 2 counts of aggravated battery against ‘peace’ officers…I took it to trial, and won (self-defense). The 2 cops went to federal prison. {Evidently a lot came to light, including a murder or two}. I don’t tend to go to Arizona any more, yet every time I’m in a situation involving the police – whether I’m a driver or passenger for a simple traffic stop or whatever, I find myself facedown on pavement, dirt, snow, whatever. This is more than 25 years AFTER the jury declared me innocent of any wrong-doing.
So what? Such is life. And yet I get along just fine w/ the local sherriff and his wife, who has a booth next to me at the farmer’s market. 🙂
    So, yeah, I can identify just a little bit w/ some aspects of what the people in Egypt have dealt with; a deep leeriness of those in “authority”. Of course, I can avoid them to some great degree. {As I said, I avoid Arizona – if I want to see cactus and sand, I go to New Mexico 😉 }
And (for now) I can speak openly on this, as I just did, here. I don’t think they can.

I’m unsure of the difference between a bobsled and a scoot…is there a couple of photos to compare handy?

Very humbling reading Erik, thanks for posting this. We have little to complain about and much to be thankfull for in our world… for now.

Actually, I disagree – it seems that we DO have a lot to complain about, and the point being that if we allow the opportunity to change to slip by (as the Morrocans and Egyptians did many years ago), then this is a preview of what we can very well expect to see our grandchildren deal with. I don’t know what the solutions are – here or over there – but we need to at least work on them.

I live about 40 miles from Hwy 12, use it constantly to get to Montana wildernesses to work – often travel it late at night. No local businesses are open then, so they won’t benefit from “all these guys” (about a dozen per trip!) to spend their money to increase the local economy.
    The basics here are
    1) This was done behind closed doors and w/out input from the locals
    2) No one likes to be confronted w/ a “done-deal” by the government that effects them directly
    3) Although it MAY be safe, this is desiginated a scenic byway – it’s supposed to be as natural as possible, and parts of the rivers and mountains were tampered with when the pullout areas and some culverts were widened or changed.

180 miles north, is Interstate 90 which is a much more direct route…but the Feds wouldn’t let them use it, and if the Feds won’t – on a road designed for just such heavy traffic – well, it makes you wonder, ayuh? Governor Butch Otter is on public record on 2008 stating that it WILL be done, and the entire weight and “authority” of the state of Idaho will guarantee it. Mainly, its come down to the issue of politicians in the pocket of big corporations rubber-stamping and greasing the skids for companies that just happen to have made big contributions to them.
I have to look up and see the mountains to remind myself I’m not in Chicago anymore. At least there, it’s normal behavior and just the way things are done. But here in a small rural state in the West…?

First of all, ‘Thank you, Carl’ for starting this thread. I had a suspicion that it might be very interesting – and so it is.

I read Carl’s letter in SFJ, and initially thought I disagreed on some points. I reread it, to better formulate my vague misgivings, only to realize that he didn’t seem to be advocating either way on whether small farmers selling direct to the public should be federally inspected; but rather they should have the choice…as well as the public, as well. After reviewing his letter and the postings herein, I come to the conclusion that no where – NO WHERE, does he even hint that his customers are unaware of the circumstance and situation. They KNOW that he slaughters the meat at his farm – and if they’re actually buying it onfarm, then obviously, they can see for themselves the environment in which he does it. And thus, can evaluate for themselves any possible risks involved. It’s not like he’s selling this meat at Wally-world 2,000 miles away from his home. So who is the government to take away my/your/his choice on what type of meat or food to buy?
For the record: this entire posting of mine is based on my own understanding of Carl’s situation, so any errors or presumptions are mine own.
