ParticipantThanks. I had another person tell me that but I wanted to get a second opinion.
Marshall
ParticipantBill, I sent you a PM.
Marshall
ParticipantNice looking horses. I wish I lived a little closer and had a few extra bucks.
Marshall
ParticipantWhen I get home tonight I will look in my manual. I am sure it will show a picture. I know some of them had shafts for one horse. If you are interested I would sell the manual. Just curious what you paid for it as I have one I want to sell.

ParticipantCongradulations John, well done!
Marshall
ParticipantI made mine 8×14. The width is good but I wish I would have made them a little longer.
Marshall
ParticipantJohn, you do a better job cutting with horses than i do with the tractor. The hay looks great. I hope mine turns out that well.
Marshall
ParticipantYeah, I would do something I didn’t really like to keep from selling the horses too. Also any combine would beat a factory job as far as I am concerned.

ParticipantYou are right about the duplicate equipment. Seems I am starting to get some of that. You never know when you will need a backup. Thats why I am probably going to keep my second potato planter.
Marshall
ParticipantJohn, If you are anything like me, using that equipment will only make you appreciate what you have even more. I used to help a neighbor that farmed using large machinery. It was fun at first but then got to the point that I didn’t even like to do it any more. To this day if I had a choice I would pick the horses. I don’t have a choice because the horses are all I can afford!!

ParticipantErika, thanks for posting the ad. I didn’t know Iron Age made potato planters. I have an Iron Age one row garden seeder. I havn’t used it but it is kind of neat. Either you got a good deal on a planter or they go cheaper in your are. Around here the Amish are paying up to nine hundred for a good single row with fertilizer. I didn’t pay quite that much but it was enough. That is part of the reason I was considering getting rid of one.

ParticipantCountymouse, you might be surpised. Last year I had a couple dozen deer in the field every day. I got five permits and only used three. After that there was hardly a deer to be seen. The DNR guy said the herd would disperse and it did.

ParticipantI talked to him shortly after the fire and he said they lost four buildings, but didn’t go into any detail. It sounded like he lost a lot.
Marshall
ParticipantYup, pretty much the same here in Michigan. Our other problem is the Dutch farmers who are not even US citizens. They have 5000 cow dairys and no place to spread manure. They are now paying $6000. per acre just to spread manure. You can’t farm land and pay for it at that rate. I could go on and on but you get the idea.
Marshall
ParticipantOk. Makes sense now. I don’t think I would be able to do it that way with working out full time. If I ever get the produce farm going full time so I can be home I will give it a try. The more I can do with the horses the better.
