ParticipantIf you end up ordering a new one, you may want to check out Fairview Country Sales or Wengerd’s Harness Shop or A & N harness. You’ll get more bang for your buck and deal with nicer folks. Depending on what kind of harness you’re looking for I know another one but I can’t think of the name of it right off but I have his catalog around here somewhere. Just my thoughts.
I have a friend here in NC that had a draft set for sale if you can let me know what you’re looking for I’ll check with him.longbo55
ParticipantThat’s pretty nifty looking. Are the plans for that available somewhere?

ParticipantAwesome! That’s not the rake I have but I’m getting closer. That rake is 10 or 12 years newer than mine and is a bit different. Merry Christmas to you also.

ParticipantI really appreciate the help. Thanks

ParticipantThanks guys. A picture would be great. I’m sure that would be worth a thousand words. I would love to see that brochure or manual. I’m been looking for a manual but so far, with no luck. Thanks for the advise on using it. Most of the fields I make hay in are fairly flat and my team is pretty calm but I will heed your advice. On ebay, I found a manual for No. 146. The pic on the front cover looks like my rake but it’s not the same model #. I just can’t find anything for an R083. Thanks again for your replies.

ParticipantHi donkeydriver. How’s the harness acquisition coming? Lots of interesting reading here hey? Welcome and glad you found the site.

ParticipantI think you got some excellent advice from the posts. The only thing I would add is there may become a time when you need to apply some pressure and assert your intentions. It seems Tank has investigated the “object” and is ok with it, maybe some pressure to let him know your desire is for him to proceed. Once results are obtained, let him rest a few seconds and think about what just happened, praise him and repeat until no pressure is required.
You’ll get it. Good luck.longbo55
ParticipantYou sent me to my copy of “The Horsedrawn Mower Book” by Lynn Miller but try as I may, I can’t find the measurement in there. I have a No. 6 so no help there. I like the suggestion (if you have time to wait for it) of getting a new one. Save that measurement!
Now I have a question (hope its ok to ask here). Can someone explain to me the difference between a plain lift and a vertical lift No. 6 McCormick-Deering sickle mower so my little pea brain can understand it?longbo55
ParticipantI use them exclusively and they are great. I hate fighting that strap. I have five sets of hames set up with them. I believe just about anybody that sells harness also sells these. There are two styles (that I know about) one for pulling and one for regular farm work. I use the ones for regular farm work and never had a problem pulling a No. 6 mower, rake, plow, cultivator and wagon. This may be a little late but I’m new here.

ParticipantI am interested in the baler. I mow and rake a lot of hay with my horses but I would really like to be able to bale it as well. Thanks. While I’m here I have a dumb question: I’m new here and I was reading over the “for sale” ads and realized finally that I was reading posts that are quite old. Is there a way to just see what is still available?

ParticipantI tried to call this number but got recording that indicates number not in service.
