Participant1. I agree with Rick go for it I think if we start slowy and build we will be better able to controll the content and quality!
2. Uinaversal horse logging association!
3.To develop some sort of state or reginal orginisation to help with training new and upcoming horse loggers Get more awareness to the general public find and permote new ways to use animal power to enhance our forest world wide!
4. more goverment help to land owners in the form of tax or cash payments to maintain there woodlots, help and encuagement in new tecnolagie to make our work safer and more proffitable, the workmens comp idea is great and more nettwoking! Tim / lanceklancek
ParticipantScott I agree totaly and my vote is for nettworking frist and work out the paticulars later! And although the email format is probely eaiser you are right about the folks that dont have or want to have internet service! But I raise my question again is there some sort of software out that allows us to net work with or can we just use word? And I still feel that a reiganal or state by state net working system would be aproperate so that we could set up say state or area chapters and not only use the news letter but be able to included some sort of area meeting with folks to do demos and work shops Tim

ParticipantYou hit the nail on the head Geoff we are not mind readers and can not tell the future. the only thing we caan do is learn from our experiances and try to do better the next time Tim

ParticipantEverybody has some great Ideas and I agree that we should not be short sited on this endevor but I would like to put some personal persective into this! As I have mentioned in past post in differant areas of this site I often felt I was a lone eagle out here ! It has been hard to find any one around this area that uses horses to log with, and most of them are Amish, but yet I have had plenty of people ask how they can get involed with our craft. They allso want to know if there are other logers doing the same thing in Indiana and I cant awnser them for the fact that I cant find that information myself! and I am sure that other reagions are the same way. So weather we do a hard copy or a email or web based news letter I tend to agreee with ricks Idea although I think we would need to figure out somthing on the price postage and how to pay for it. I also think that we should have some sort of state or regenal representation to premote our work and ideas to that local area! And not just on horse loging but as others have sudgeted on all areas of forestry and substainable living and most of all ways to make a living wage at what we love to do ! ParticipantDid the public have any good questions for you Jhon? I was wih a friend the other day at the Jhon Deer dealer The head guy was there and during the conversation he heard that I was a horse logger, he couldnt belive it said that he thought that are group had died out years ago! Then he spent 2 hours asking me all sorts of questions about how we do things he then anouced that he thought I should preform at there customer appreciation days this fall This should be interesting!

ParticipantMy thoughts are to devide a group of 20 to 30 people that have pratical experiance into differante reagins, allow this group to be a core group as rick suddjested! Then use these people to generate information and input form the general public and experts then bring this back to the centeral group for discussion and a final vote on how to incorperate this into the paper. IE; Jason could submitt the information about the gentleman in kY and we could use the group to dicuss the marrits of useing this in the paper! A group this small would be easyer to handle, and maybe after we get going then others could be nomonated to come in and replace some of those that will for one reason or other not be able to contenue with the paper. I would also like to know wether tere is soft ware that would allow use to network our computers to help with the wrighting and printing of this paper Tim

ParticipantI think that both Jim and rick have interesting points! maybe break it up into four to eight devisions and then coralate induviduals in those regians to set up groups to break down the work load!

ParticipantI have allso been working with a new approch of uittilizing lower grade material by removing most of the defects in a log in the woods and marketing the material in the form of parts insted of long boards ! In this way we can use pallet grade material and make into a high grade product. We have also been useing the saw dust and makeing it into pellets for kiln drying our lumber! And I want to do some more work with trying to use wood alcahall for use in gas engians considering that this was the frist fuel used in the combustion engian theres no reason that we cant use it agian
lancek
Participanthey Jason, great video glade to see your useing those Sterling grades I will never forget when I graduated from there everyone laughed at me because I wanted to use horses to log said that we would never see them in the forest agian, Guse we fooled them! My son is 18 and wanted to know if we would see Jager cut that fast down in tn when we see you this fall he must make alot of money if he works by the foot lol.I wish we could get some of the local folks around here to cooperate the way they do there in floyed.I personaly would like to see more shows like this on tv maybe we should do a show like American loggers or axe men [ less all the cussing and nonsence of corse a real show showing the real thing] Tim

ParticipantThat sounds like a good idea!

Participantall though I agree with the concept of useing local lumber to build local houses I see problems with coruption with in the system ! The origenal intention of the grade stamp system was set in place by lumber companys to keep the small mills from compeating for the houseing markets by making the smaller mills jump through hoops and incure a lot of expence in doing so. this was a way of stiffeling the competion and keeping the market share to the induviduals that had grandfathered into useing the grade stamp! And they did this all in the name of safety. This is like alot of other laws that have been set into effect with the general public in mind but have been corupted to keep people in line and the cash flow going to the few!
You wacth a lot of the big contractors that were buying lumber from canada will now be buying saws and going after as much timber as they can get taking the best and leaving the rest and useing this as a marketing tool to sell green, and a lot of the folks that have been trying to promote this idea since the 70s will be left out in the cold because they dont have the clout to stop some of the rules and regulations that will be funled through the state buy lobbyest for the big companys! And what you will see is the same thing as the gradeing stamp but under a differant law! And Jason this is why I agree with the fact that we need to form some sort of lobbying group with our new orginisation to hopefully give us a place at the table along side these lobbyest!- AuthorPosts
