Thanks guys, I will be insuring the horse logging business. I have been doing tree work informally for a while and I figure it is time to get some insurance and take it a little more seriously. I was figuring I would charge an hourly rate and most of my customers are already customers of our farm so I should be able to explain the cost variables pretty well.
I normally charge between $35 to $60/hour for chainsaw work. What kind of hourly rates are people charging this year?

That is great, I am so happy that there is much more info floating around. It wasn’t long ago I posted some questions on this hitching system and there wasn’t a lot of info available on this forum.

I may have a big logging job lined up for this winter (my first) if I think I can handle it. The terrain is very steep but it is chock full of nice maple and almost all downhill skids to the road. It will be a lot of variables to mess with at once but I think using a single horse with the Scandinavian style arch will work well in the tight quarters.

I have fed corn stover to horses with no Ill effects. It was not a significant portion of their diet though and it is usually only in the fall when we have extra. I also feed who cobs and know of other that do as well. I have never had a horse choke on anything. Sorry this isnt technical but a little never hurts.

I for one had a great time. My mission was to talk logging with some folks who are in the know and I learned a ton. Mark you are one of the guys I was hoping to talk with but I guess I will have to add you into a road trip.

Its too bad you guys dont have mountains out there because there are a lot of great deals on nice farms…. but I need mountains

I borrowed a 7 1/2 bow today to see how it fit and it was about two finger widths too wide but the depth was right on the center hole. I think because she is a lean dairy animal she is gonna take a tall narrow bow. Her 3 month old bull calf has about the same width just not the depth.

so I must have been measuring too far up the neck? how far ahead of the shoulders do you measure. I thought I was at the spot that Tim’s video shows with Will.

From My experience some horses work really well this way. It does limit what you can do a bit and can sometimes turn into bad habits, like following you when you want to walk behind them to hitch up…
