    Jay,

I had mine out the last two days. It was perfect in the woods, nice and quiet. Glad to hear you had a chance to get out and enjoy your team.

Well, we’ve finally got some snow, and last week while the farrier was here I swapped wheels for skis while she swapped shoes. Today was the first chance I had to get out with the sleigh I bought off Dayspring Farm on this site. It was great to get out and enjoy the snow for a day. Somehow it makes cocoa taste better… Here’s hoping we can keep a bit of winter around for a while.

    Pics please 🙂

Sorry my inbox was full, try to resend your message.

    Robert,

I have quarts available and it would cost $16.00 for one quart and about $13.00 to ship it flat rate through the US Postal Service.

Hope all is well with you,

There are a couple good books about logging history from the mast-pine days on up that talk about ridiculous hitches: Holy old mackinaw by Stewart Holbrook and Tall Trees Tough Men by Richard Pike are my favorites. They talk about hitches of up to 200 oxen for the old growth stuff, tree-length, even of stationing “spare” oxen all along the skid road to replace teams that got trampled. Might be the tradition of loggers embellishing the truth, but it sounded credible to me, if you can imagine that.

I’m not sure if those pictures up above are from the west coast, but by the time loggers got out there in earnest (late 1800s-1900) they had some other stuff going on, like steam donkeys (a steam powered winch that would pull a hitch along a cable running on pulleys hung high up in trees). It looks like that fourth picture could be something like that going on. If you guys like logging history and lore, check out those books. They are full of amazing little tidbits like that.

I have read the “Tall Tree’s Tough Men”, by Richard Pike. Great book and some really good photos too.

Ed, I just saw the email from John come through and it looks very promising. They are asking for some specific information now so it probably would be best for us now do develop the specific proposal that includes the initial work of John and others as well as the requirements for the educational components that we have been discussing. So we will have to nail down some hard numbers on the filming and related work in particular. We will also need to propose a timeline for when specific activities will begin and be accomplished.

They can not fund us directly but it sounds like they can rally groups that can. Do you know of a sympathetic conservation group or related association with granting authority that we could approach and direct funds to as we work with FS to fund this? It would be great if they have an intense interest in the region.

    Good work.

    Tim,

I do not know of any conservation groups that we could work with. I will contact John Marunowski today and see if he can steer me in the right direction then I can reach out to them.

Ah, that makes sense. I have never been to a clinic so I was confused as to how this might work. I like it.

And I agree, an official title for the event is important for marketing and sponsorship purposes. I think that would apply for all events too.

Help me understand the one on one aspect of this workshop. Sam is only one guy, how many people do we expect to register for this class? If 10 people register what will the other 9 people be doing while Sam works on setting up someone’s plow with their team?

Will he really be spending the whole day with someone or will he be bouncing around from participant to participant? Are we asking the auditors to offset the smaller class size?

Nice work Tim and all, I suggest we involve Reeva as she has the information regarding insurance and who is or is not covered. The event host may not need to provide insurance if we have already purchased it for the year to cover all events.

I suggest we find the money in the budget somewhere or make a new line item for it. I think if we are going to pay these professional services for teamsters at events, we should reimburse the people for their calls behind the scenes to organize it if it costs them something.

This comes back to my original concern that BOD members, event helpers, cooks or envelope stuffers are not considered to be as important as the teamster (as far as compensation is concerned), without any of us this organization goes nowhere.

We already use freeconferencecall.com. Its free to the organization, but not to those who all in. Ed, if it makes it any easier, the call fees are tax deductible, just like your travel would be if you traveled to a meeting.

I do not itemize so a tax deduction is no good to me. Even if I change my phone service to include long distance it will be $36.00 more than I pay now. That is $432.00 a year. I like the idea of the toll free number.

Great news Jen. We have a lot to discuss. We should identify the number of assistants Sam will need and then line them up soon. I have no experiance with plowing, at least with horses anyway, and can not help in that capacity. But I am eager to assist in any way I can.

This is going to be an exciting year. 🙂

We have had Haflingers in the past and they are great partners. Good luck with your new team.
