ParticipantWe used oats and peas as a cover crop for alfalfa and harvested it as silage(hard to harvest). I remember my dad talking about oat hay, figured its all grass as long as you make it relatively early it’s gotta be good feed. I will tell my buddy I’m not nuts or at least not the only one who is. Now to figure out what it was sprayed with last year it was corn. He traded hay for rent but got bad hay (moldy) so the deal ended a year early. Eli

ParticipantFSA was a good thing for us without them I would not have gotten a chance to farm. Any way the thing is to explore all of your options talk to your local Chamber of Commerce and Small Busness Association they have Busness loans and grants if you qualify. Weigh your options and good luck. Eli

ParticipantLooks like fun. My harness has straps that keep the shafts from lifting up. Im not an expert but I’m sure someone will help. I have a Morgan that drives in a breast collar type harness but I need a 18-20 inch collar so I can harness her up and play in the woods. Eli

ParticipantWhen I got my first FSA loan I was rotationally grazing my dairy heard. They were more interested in my business plan and profitability. As long as I had accurate numbers. However that was 20 years ago. Good luck.

ParticipantI would get to know the seller and explan your plan for the place. If the seller likes what you want to do and wants you to have it they will be much more flexible with price and financing. There is a million ways to finance things and having the seller on your side is a great place to start. They don’t make any more land and historically land has been a great invest ment I hope to leave mine to my children. Good Luck. Eli

ParticipantJust be careful those blades are sharp as a kid I mowed hay with a new idea mower and a farmall H tractor then when I was about 13 we got a IH fast hitch mower and I steped up to the 460 farmall and no pitman arm to break. But when I was folding the cutter bar to go down the road the rotation moved the cutter bar and cut the crap out of my fingers. Still have the scars. I was 13 and I’m 48 now that so was 35 years ago and I still rember having to lift the cutter bar up to get my fingers out then drive 3 miles home. I don’t know what my parents were thinking

ParticipantI am leaning towards a heavy duty ground drive fore cart it gives me the most options down the road. I have access to several pto mowers so the the pto cart would give me the most bang I could spreads manure, cut hay, rake hay, bail hay, pull a finish mower and the brakes would be awesome for training. Time will tell. Eli
