If I had been more aware of it earlier I could have brought down an old pair of Halflinger sized D-Ring harnesses. They would not be good for much other than training and pulling light loads, but it would have been something. I started a Halflinger in harness with this set years ago and have not had a use for them since. Well if you know of anyone driving down from the northeast this spring you are welcome to them.

Where there are some rocks, there will always be more to follow. Freezing and thawing, and tillage bring new stones the the surface every year if the ground has any stones in it at all.

Yes some people do use weighted sleds or stoneboats to train and or condition. Many people into pulling contest will spend hours towing loads behind their teams to get them fit.

    Welcome Tim (?),

Ask away that is what we are here for to help each other strengthen the working draft animal community. These threads are searchable, just type in a key word above and a list of thread containing that topic will come up. Feel free to bring up (by replying to) an old thread for further discussion or clarification, or start a new thread. If you need any help just ask! There is also more information on our other website for our organization. DAP.com is our Forum, but http://www.draftanimalpowernetwork.org/index.html is our main site for Draft Animal Power Network, an educational non profit run by volunteers.

Thanks for taking that first step, we looking forward to you making many more,

It is certainly an investment in your future, I would even think that you can write it all off as an educational expense for business purposes. I know I have:)

Nothing like slow steady work to sharpen up any team. My boys are in for a surprise when I get home, if Carl left any firewood in the lot :), but certainly when we start with garden work.

That is how the clay was in NY summer of 2010, even with a tractor it didn’t want to stay in the ground, and when it was in the ground I was plowing blocks of clay into the furrow i was filling.

In NY my steers would call out to us at feeding times (we were always late feeding them no matter what time it was) and sometimes it seemed that they would call when they recognize us (myself and an older gentleman that fed them when I was away). They would regularly come when called and would call back when called.

Now in VT morning chores are a lot earlier in the day and when you call them at 6 am, they may wake up from there sleeping spot in the woods and you may find them standing waiting for you to come and get them, but they may still be down. They don’t call back at this time. If you wait for them to start wondering where you are and time goes by and it is about 8am you may find them waiting at the gate, if you are really late they may call out.

The change in routine seems to have made them quiet. And it is not just me, I called VT the other day and they are doing the same for Carl, I guess they are just late risers. The one time that they seem vocal now is if I am gone for some time, say 5 days, when I get home and call hello to them, they will call out no matter what time of day it is. I consider this the recognition call.

I think that once you find the right amount of feed for them (and that horse hay sounds lush), feed them at your normal times, and ignore their calling between meals, they should quiet down. It may not hurt to get some less rich hay and use it with the good stuff to fill their bellies more. Just my two cents.

    Hi All,

I just learned that I am having company come down for my birthday and this visit also lands on March 5th my only real full day off of braiding. Does anyone object if we move this meeting to March 6th at 7pm?

Proposed agenda, please feel free to add what I have forgotten or don’t know about.

    1. Website report – Jen, hopefully there will be a meeting with David to talk about

    2. Membership – Ethan

    3. Sponsorship – To meet our budget we need to raise at least $1500 in sponsorship for the newsletter and websites. By this meeting could everyone pick 4 from the lists that Reva has provided and add them to the thread that Jen has started for this purpose. Please do not duplicate what others have selected, we only want to approach each individual/business once.

    4. Newsletter – Erika, We hope to have information about our current advertisers (paid, in-kind, when they expire, etc) We really need to amp up how many paid advertisers we have in our newsletter, it really could be paying for its self. Content update, set advertising goals, discuss if there is anything special that we want to do for the Summer issue so that we can plan now.

Please let me know what else I should add, I raced to do this before my battery runs out!

If only these crops were that fast and easy to grow!

and I changed my mind about Florida, the weather is nice and tolerable but there is nothing but work for me here, I can’t wait to get home and get my hands dirty somewhere, anywhere but here.

The place where I was in NY started tapping a few this week, it is running, but who knows how it will turn out.
