Wengers has some good stuff pass through their gates, but you will pay for it. They can be talked down, even if you pull into the yard with a competitors tractor on your trailer, it’s been done before. Best of Luck.

I just reviewed my summer work schedule and I may have this weekend free. I was offered a truck to borrow if this is the case, so maybe I will be able to make it after all. I would be bringing a pair of long yearling steers, a stoneboat and a dish to pass. I hope it works out, I am not doing my fair this summer and would like to get them to a new situation or two this year.

I don’t know if they have horns or not, but if they are not used to being lead, with or without horns you will be better off leading them with halters until they get good at it. Unless the are well trained, a cow can easily walk/run away with you on the end of a lead attached to a collar. Homeopathic remedies can be given in water or dissolved in water and put on grain if they eat any, one friend will also put it in a spray bottle and mist around the house to keep husband and cats in harmony. Best of Luck.

It is hard to find small commercial hatcheries in the upper northeast. I know of Yankee chicks, but they are really brokers and get chicks from western NY and PA. The NEPPA Hatchery (Northeast Pasture Poultry Assoc) is in Fort Plain, NY in Amish Country. The Geis’s are actually draft people them selves and have had articles in SFJ. Though NEPPA is a dead organization now, they received a grant from Heifer International to start the hatchery so that producers in the Northeast had a source of quality chicks that did not have to be shipped half way across the country to get here. They buy eggs from Myers of PA and hatch them out in NY, . When I lived next to Bennington, VT the chicks would hatch on Tuesday and they would be waiting for me Wednesday first thing at the local post office. I have rarely ever lost a bird that they have shipped, even in the summer or cool months. I highly recommend them.

Except for them turning easier to the left, your team and mine sound so similar on many levels. Until the last few months I was ignorant to the fact that they should not touch when turning and since then I have not had the enough time or conditions to practice nearly as much as I would like to. I use a goad with a lash and find it rather nice to use, I have used a beef show stick before (I showed my roan in beef and dairy showmanship at the fair) and it works but I can reach so much further with my lash. One thing that I like to do it use obstacles set them up for success, I will ask them to side step with a tree or pile of logs in front of them for example. Just give them a situation where it is easy for them to choose the correct response. I work on turning when I can and they are slowly getting better, but slowly because I have not been able to work them consistently enough. They are what we put into them.

A good team (generally a show team) will not touch a pole or chain, but in the real world I don’t have a good show team and they rub the chain from time to time. I slip my chain through a length of fire hose. If you have friends in the local volunteer station, they generally have a hose or two that fails the annual pressure test, if you can get your hands on the right diameter you will be good to go for a long time. As far a cleaning, I don’t but you can take a brush or hose to it if you wanted to.

My Shorthorns are only 18 months old, the team that I sold would have been 3 though. It is nice to be home, just wish there was more work to do with them, but I know that there will be soon. I can’t post photos here, but if you would like here is a link to a photo, http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150771589189042&set=a.274346979041.179721.679389041&type=3&theater

Thanks for posting, I know this forum is weighed heavy on the Northeast side of the country, but we love to hear about other events that are going on.

I would give him a few good days to heal up good and as long as he is not in pain or the yoke doesn’t interfere with the wound light work should be ok. Just watch the wound and his reactions, he will tell you all you need to know. Cattle are tough, not saying that they are ok to work in pain, just that they seem to handle things well.
