ModeratorI use composition notebooks ๐ a different color for each business and third that lives in my truck recording mileage, gas purchases and repairs. I don’t know if I have a good tax lady, or I’m just used to organizing my info just enough, but taxes cease to intimidate me with a paper system.

ModeratorWith a single pole, most commonly you only have 2 on the pole with a regular yoke and backing power, the 3rd horse is there for forward power.ย For a plow this works fine, but if you want 3 to hold a load down a hill you may want shafts or some other alternative set up.
This is the first photo that I have been able to post in ages, Thanks Gabe!

Moderator“i will defend it by saying that draft animals still have their niche market and place by showing development in in developed countries, and so there is no reason not to use them accordingly.”
Don’t forget that using draft animals is important as as a environmentally friendly energy source, they can survive on pastures not fit for tillage and reproduce themselves. I just wanted to point out their other beneficial features ๐
Good Luck with it, I think that I would find an English copy to be an interesting read and look forward to reading it someday.

ModeratorShould be a great run today in Northern CT.ย Some folks are shutting down but were are still going strong. The last few days we have shipped over 1,000 gallons each day to the neighbor for boiling.ย Since we tapped one bush rather late it is flowing well, while the one tapped 2/13 is starting to slow some. Some pails are doing well, yesterday they made the shift to the better pails coming off the north side of the trees.ย We changed many of the star sap ladders over to a two pipe ladder and increased our vacuum at the end of the lines by as much as 8 inches in some places, starting with nothing in November it is amazing how much you can learn in one season. All in all a very good start to the first season in over 15 years.

ModeratorThere are so many designs, and the best one for you is what fits your financial, time and pasturing goals, including the ease of moving it.ย There is also the possibility ofย keeping a coop in the center of you pasture and rotating an electric chicken fence around it in pie shaped wedges.
Here is a good read with many options http://www.plamondon.com/chicken-coops.html, i find the Salatin structure hard to move and hard to catch birds in when the time comes.ย I like the type that use bent conduit like this one, http://www.grit.com/multimedia/image-gallery.aspx?id=4294979516&seq=4, they are easy to work in, shed rain and snow well, laying boxes can be added to the back wall, and you can use it as a tractor or a coop with fencing.
Best of luck with the new chicken endeavor, there is nothing like a fresh home raised egg or meat bird, come to think of it I should take one out of the freezer, I have been hording the last few ๐

ModeratorWelcome back Bivol,
I had faith that you were still with us and I am glad to hear that you only took a break. It happens, but we are glad that you thought of us and are doing a draft thesis, more draft studies should be done in schools. Come back when you can, but be aware that we are changing to a new website on Monday and that you will have to log in with a new password. The new site will incorporate all that our Draft Animal Power Network does including this forum.
Be Well and don’t give up the dream of being a teamster someday,
Erika

ModeratorWill permissions be reset so that those of us not able to use photos of any kind at the moment, be able to use them in the future?

ModeratorI was inspired to write after I saw who the sponsors were, they are phishing for good testimonials for biotech, and I will give them the opposite, but in a manner that promotes draft animals as a useful tool with modern advancements.

ModeratorStudents of the Plow (this includes the perpetual student type too), there are 10 days left until the clinic price goes up (April 1 ), so take advantage of the pre-registration prices now. Come plow under the guidance of former National Plowing Champion Sam Rich. Use this opportunity to prepare your plow and animals for success in the field, practice what you learn and go home ready to take on your own plowing project. Auditors, watch the details of how to tune-up and fix various plows, watch how to prepare your animal(s) for success using the plow, making adjustments in the field, starting and finishing a land, plowing in garden, corn ground and possibly sod too, vertical and skim plowing can be touched on if there is interest as well. We are only limited by time, there is a lot to cover in 3 days!
Event highlights so far:
-Pioneer Homesteader with plow attachment will be used with a team of Halflingers on a garden plot, just the thing that these beauties were designed to do. The garden plot is seeded down to winter rye and has some brassica trash, so if you are interested in seeing a how a Homesteader handles, this is the place to be the Weekend of April 20 & 21.
– We have a walking plow that we will be refurbishing and putting new handles on. New handles is easy to do, but not easy to do well. If you would like to see how it is done, Friday is the day to attend.
– Also Friday we will be sharpening a plow point and taking a single Oliver walking plow from a useless heap of scrap metal to a useful tool.
– We won’t know until the last minute, but we have new neighbors that would like to bring their single plow and Suffolk mare to the clinic if they move to CT in time for the event, we wish them well and hope to see them.
– Besides a Homesteader and a walking plow we would love to attract someone who wants help with their sulky plow, they are functionally similar to the others, but there are much more to them to fix and tune up, we have a couple to tinker with as examples if this turns into a walking plow only event.
– We-Li-Kit Farm will be demonstrating plowing with a 2 way Sulky Plow, and plowing with steers and a walking plow if time permits and attendees are interested.
– Food, no DAPNet event is complete without excellent meals and good company. Homemade meals including some home grown goodness, vegetarian and gluten free options if requested, please register early so that we can plan ahead. Rumor has it that a fiddle and a banjo have been invited to the supper on Saturday.Take advantage of this unique opportunity this year, because Sam will be taking a break from the clinic next year as he delves into a new business and readies his horses for a serious competition.
We hope to see you in Abington, CT for this unique event,

ModeratorSam’s mother smells fine now, but the dog has had 2 baths and though much better, he still has room for improvement. With a direct hit there is only so much washing it out with anything.

ModeratorIt just started to break today, the ice started to loosen in the lines of the new bush that we started tapping yesterday, and then the sun went away ๐ We will take more cold weather over sustained hot weather, just have to cut more wood for the greenhouse is all.

Let stand for 5 minutes
