    Brad:

I have used these boots in the woods on one of my geldings who has thin soles. They work well. Keep an eye out if you go through any mud as they can pull off in those conditions.

I built a “Whizbang” chicken plucker and it has worked great (http://www.whizbangbooks.com/). You can put 3-4 birds at a time and it does a near-perfect job.

I would like to rig a set of stub guards on my Easy Cut Mower. Unfortunately the knife on the East Cut works on a slightly higher plane than a regular knife section (on the manufacturer’s recommendation, I had to shim up the inside and outside ledger plates). Can someone explain why regular guards tend to plug on the inside more than other parts of the mower? I can understand if your grassboard doesn’t do a good job (or you or the horses veer off the cleared path), but other than that the inside faces the same conditions as the rest of the mower, no? Still, my mowers plug mostly on the inside followed distantly by the outside of the mower.

Here is a link on some info on hitching 3 abreast: http://www.ruralheritage.com/equip_shed/3abreast.htm

I use the same line set-up in the first picture and it has worked well for me. I also off-set my pole and use the evener set-up pictured on the middle right of the page. The off-set pole has the advantage of keeping your 3 horses centered infront of your wheeled vehicle.

    Good luck.

These are seals for the clutch lever, smaller than the pitman seals. I got in touch with Brubaker’s and ordered some today.

    Hey Donn:

Thanks for the reply. I helping a friend rebuild a mower and he needs to replace these seals. He tried calling Norm at McNair’s, but apparently he is on vacation for a few weeks? I found Joe’s Master equipment # by searching DAP but couldn’t find Peachy’s. Do you have that number?

Thanks Tim – very informative. No evidence of EAB here in northern Vermont yet, but it seems inevitable. Are you able to sell logs after EAB damage or is it all firewood? What is the ash market like in your area?

I would put her in a round pen. If you don’t have one and your horses respect electric wire, you could make one 30-50′ in diameter. I would stand in the center with the bridle and send her on a couple of laps (or more) at a good steady trot. I would then bring her into the center and see if she will accept the bit. If she resists (which she likely will), don’t force the bit in her mouth or cajole her, just send her on a few more laps. I would repeat this until you see her resisting less. Once you see some progress, praise her and maybe stop for the day and try again tomorrow. I envision 10-15 minutes session tops. The idea is your mare has a choice: she can accept the bit willingly or she can trot around in circles.

    Good luck.

I use a .22 to the brain stem and then a knife to the neck. With my animals, any kind of manipulation (tying, flipping, etc.) would cause a certain degree of stress which I am trying to avoid at slaughter. More than one way to skin a cat…..or goat.

No army worms here, but a good friend in the next town over (Fairfield, VT) had all his pastures decimated by army worm. The only thing they left was clover.

We started our second cut today on one 4 acre field that we cut in May – mid 80s and humid. Cooler weather to come……

I have only done this job twice (on 2 different mowers) and I used 2 seals both times. So far so good.
