    Hi Carl:

Nice looking and mare and seemingly a good match for your gelding. I would be interested to hear about her integration into your “herd”. Anecdotes about training/working successes and challenges and your approach to them would be appreciated.

Thanks for the responses. $100/MBF before trucking is better than I expected – similar to firewood which sells on the landing between $70-$75/cord. I seldom make an extra trip (or twitch in this case) for low value wood and just leave it to rot, but if it is attached I will take it out. Since I only log for myself (no trucking horses and the associated expenses), my costs are pretty low and I think I can make out OK with these prices.

One thing to consider if you are debating between one and two sleds for logging is the layout of your woods. If you have nice looping roads/skid trails, I bet those double sleds would work slick. If not, I think it would be very difficult – if not impossible – to back those sleds. I use a scoot with 12′ runners and one of its disadvantages over the bobsled is it is harder to back and maneuver in tight places. Let us know how it works out.

    Hi Joel:

Glad to hear you picked up a bobsled. I am a huge fan of my single sled for logging. I am going to let Carl answer those questions. In the meantime, here are some links to previous discussions:

    Hey Donn:

Thanks for the pictures. I have done this on several mowers and it is interesting to see how you do it. Do you replace the inner and outer ledgers as automatically on mowers that you are renovating? It looks like you knock off the rivet head and then use that tap-like tool. What is that by the way? Then punch and clean out with a drill?

It is hard to see from your picture, but is that ledger serrated? I have only serrated ledgers as replacements, but the originals are not serrated (at least the ones I have worked on). Any thoughts on how this affects performance?

PS Tech question: you used to post pictures in the body of your post as opposed to providing a link. Have you figured out how to do this with the new platform?

    Hi John:

I have a friend who might be interested. Can you send along your phone number so I can pass that on to him? Or feel free to call him (Ken Carter 802.933.8325).

    Hi John:

Didn’t you have a Forest logging arch? If so, I’d be interested to hear how it compares to the Farmer Brown. Also interested in why you are selling this.

    Thanks.

Your cart looks and sounds good. I like that you made it. I had some plans drawn up to make my own when I found a Forest logging arch for a very reasonable price. I am curious what you use the slip hooks for? I have two on the sides of my arch (in between the set of grabs) and have never found a use for them.

The only suggestion I would make would be more areas for carrying gear (saw, peavey, etc.) Here is an old post with some renovations I made to my cart…..

Although I am not interested in the Barden cart, I am curious as to what you have for a logging cart and how you like it?

    Hey Ed:

Nice video. That is a nice sized disk for a single horse. How is your single-horse mower working? Did you cut all your hay with Ozzie? I am curious b/c I have a nice single horse mower that needs work.

    Hi Ed:

I would leave as much residual as you can (i.e. don’t clip). Fall is an important time for root growth and carbohydrate storage. Clipping or grazing tight this time of year interrupts that important stage and will stunt growth in the spring. My haying mentor – a retired dairy farmer who still splits 20 cords of wood by hand at age 78 – would often forgo 3rd cut in order to help regenerate his hay fields. This was in stark contrast to many farmers who would either take a 3rd cut (or 4th) or graze it off if there wasn’t enough to hay.

Here is link that I found which may explain more….
