what working condition is he in?

in reply to: Ox as pack animals #73038

we use an old swedish army-packsaddle, the girth and belts had to be enlarged some; I hook it up to our 3-pad-harness to stabilize it; works perfectly well
your plan sounds like a lot of fun 😎

in reply to: frustrating day with the boys #72934

what, if you realize the situation is not developing in a way you want it and you do not intend to let the boys off the hook before they understand what you ask, what about just breaking off and letting them stand there, until everybody’s mood has cooled enough to give the lesson another start; then, the instant they respond the way you want, let them go?

    medical question:
since the jugularis vein shows up very prominently in most of these oxen while they pull, is there a chance of accidentially rupturing it or has an animal ever fainted? would that ever turn into a varicose vein?

not that I recommend manure spread over salad before it is cut, BUT:
we don’t live in a sterile environment! and by the way we can’t either…
at least as important as what you consider now is the fact, what you do with your vegetables after harvesting them?
will they be on the road for days?
will they be wrapped in plastic for days?
how high is the humidity in the vegetables immediate environment?
    temperature?
will they be eaten raw or boiled/fried/baked…
all factors can contribute to a problem or solve it and will differ with the various vegetables

in reply to: Training oxen to "moo" (accidentally) #72291

I consider this the recognition call.

a short remark on the moos:
yes, positively the moos vary in quality and serve their purpose; not only can one distinguish who is mooing, but there are a number of basic meanings to them (at least I claim they do talk):
a questioning call as in: is there anybody?
a “little” welcome moo as in: nice to see you
a regular welcome moo as in: here you are
a reminding “food” moo as in: time for my fodder
a louder “food” moo as in: ey, I’m hungry
an angry “food” moo as in: food, now!
a “call” moo as in: calf, where are you?
a panicky “call” moo as in: calf I lost you, where are you?
a moo as in: get over, milkbar is open

been too dumb to get the pvc-pipes bent into a usable bow; not sure if our pvc is different… anyway, came up with another solution:
used two different diameter water hoses and stuck them into each other; cut to desired length they made a perfect bow for the training yoke; had plans on repeating the idea with the larger yokes and stiffening the bows by inserting two canes/irons for the straight part; luckily a friend provided “real” bows, so that will be someone elses try…

These seem reasonable, the only one that seems odd to me is the 77 inch length to the brisket board. That seems like a lot of lunge space to the front of the stall. Elke, can you check that just to make sure that 1,2 x rump height guideline is correct?

    .
been checking, and think those numbers are ok since it also says:
neck rail forward location: 1,2x rump height (directly above brisket board)
the only other thing important was: nothing to impede with head bob when getting up
info is from an aabp-conference about 5 years ago

By rump height, are you referring to the tail head?

yes (sorry answer needs 10 characters 😎 )

in reply to: Tie Stalls for Oxen #71616

    numbers for dairy freestalls:
stall length to solid front: 2x rump height
stall length for completely open front: 1,8x rump height
bed length (t0 brisket board): 1,2x rump height
deterrent strap in front open stalls: 0,7x rump height (nothing below this to impede head)
stall width: 2x hook bone/hip width
    hope that helps

They get used to lots of stopping and starting with me walking around them moving strange objects.

yep, completely different from what I have been asking up to now; started with branches etc. recently; but moving on “small ground” (turns and stops and backs on a dime) and me being not in my usual position all the time and strange things going on around them sure keeps them busy…
had the chain saw working close by the other day, they tried to outmooh it, sure didn’t work 😎
