Membera door that will open only to a collar with a transponder?
CharlyBonifaz
MemberIt looked to be a ring with a sort of “T” inserted – I assume a sort of quick release. Charly, do you have any other info or pictures on this system?
just a simple toggle system from what I could see

at 12:41 during the video they are hooking up the bridle chain, it appears to be on the back bob. Is this correct? What advantage is there to having it on the back bob?
it is the back one;
no they don’t explain, they just say because there is a steep way ahead they put it there and it can be kicked off during motion.at 7.15 they mark the stump with a cross: that’s to keep the bad spirits away

The pictures I have seen were halter-halter or collar-halter as here
seems like the donkeys were too smart to run into mayor problems but after a week the cattle were easy to be led
first I heard from this was an article in the magazin of our artificial insemination centre, then I was told it used to be arranged similarly in Ireland as wellCharlyBonifaz
Memberany chance you or your neighbour own a donkey?
tied together the donkey will teach even a bull to be ledDecember 25, 2012 at 10:15 pm in reply to: A different kind of insulated water tank: 275 gallons, 42 watts #76399CharlyBonifaz
Membermy cattle loves tarp to chew on 🙁
I, however, like a heated toilet seat this time of the year …serious: I like the idea of having it black to catch any sun there is
is there a heating system that would benefit from solar panels? as an add on to regular electricity?any idea to wrap your system good enough to set it in a pile of manure to keep it warm and you just have to heat the pipe and the wateroutlet? that would make it stationary though …

Do they typically come in various sizes?
they do come in various sizes, as breeds and animals used were of different size (f.e. oxen versus cows)
during the war they were even standardized (Stirnjoch D.R.G.M.) and offered 5 different sizes
@Oxhill 37987 wrote:Is size of great importance?
too small means a lot of pressure on the temple, were you don’t want it plus the draft-chains would rub along the body
too big would make their fit “sloshy”, which would most likely result in soresCharlyBonifaz
Memberlooks like you better plan a trip to Germany for the February 23-24 gathering.
I would even host you if you could make it 🙂
and you would hava a chance to look at every single one of them as they are from up close“Oberpfälzer Stirnjoch”
these would obviously be the easiest to make; there are 2 varieties:
on the ones with the round “sticks” the board needs to be chamfered (?) so the sticks tend to point outwards a bit
on the ones with the square “sticks” the stick’s head is bevelled for the same reason; the stick here needs a square hole in the board as not to be able to turn in place
padding them should not be a problem, leather straps to keep them in place not either; padding was usually done with horse hair or eelgrass, everything else would not stand the sweat and pressure for very long; same reason for using cloth instead of leather
as you can also see: the ends were wrapped with iron bands, that is where the strain breaks them“Thüringisches Stirnjoch”
yes, they are bent and surprisingly light; their pad is a smaller, more elegant, also providing less contact when in use.
the leather straps holding them were usually crossed to prevent sideway sliding; wood used was oak, beech, ashif I had any knowledge of working iron, I would probably go for one of these:
“eiserne rheinisch-pfälzische Stirnjoche” or “Eifeler Stirnjoch”
one could bend the iron as needed, that would most likely keep forever; iron should not stick out too far sideways, otherwise it would function as lever 🙁 and get stuck in tight places; then add the pad as pleased and a couple of straps to hold the front yoke on the horns; padding can be replaced in an instant, same goes for the straps and it is unbreakablea good idea for all of these is to think of flies in the summertime: while pulling in a front head yoke the animals cannot combat flies so it might be a good idea to add a net or better leather-strings to keep the insects at bay

Can anyone speak to the advantages and disadvantages of this technique?
since I teach mine to work both ways may be I can help…
as was mentioned before: one got more flexibility to harness different animals together; another positive aspect comes to my mind: ploughing along a hillside f.e. when the animals have to work longer at different soil levels; it gives the individual animal more space to move (less interdependance with the partner); you can change the way you have hitched them quickly if need be: two besides each other or behind each other; a discussable advantage: that’s the way it has always been 😉
yes, you not only need more gear but you also have to carry it and have more chance to get entangledwhat I cherish about the neckyoke: its very simplicity to make and to use
I claim there is no one and only good way to harness oxen; they all have their pros and cons and need to be considered as to what type of work needs to be done in what kind of surrounding
there is a video of French ox drovers that shows a yoke for 3 oxen: 2 older ones on the side and the greenhorn in the middle
some of the front head yokes could easily be carved by the oxdrover as well and not necessarily implied big expenses

MemberTighten up the high headed ones bow also sometimes helps
dropping the bow lower slows down the fast one.
isn’t that the exact opposite idea for the same problem? am I not getting the idea? please explain…
