Carl, What do you think of the quality of you new swivel?
Haven’t pulled any wood with it yet, but they look really well built, and seem strong enough.

No actually, I don’t feed the entire chain through. Just a few links and a loop. Fingers are never close to pinch point as I use the ring portion when lifting the evener, but when hooking chain I hold the end of the grab…. there is a nubbens on both sides so one can pinch the link easily even with mittens on. Very fast. Never comes unhooked.
Furthermore I don’t hook with one hand. I don’t hold lines while hitching logs.

ModeratorA Keyhole Grab, or Bitch-link with a swivel is by far my most favorite skidding hook. Far superior to open grabs, and the ring is built in. Beyond impossible to break, doesn’t hook on ANYTHING other than the choker that is placed into it. Here are two options for attaching a swivel, one is the swivel Kevin posted above, the other is a swivel I cut open and re-welded (Early attempt at torch welding:confused:).

ModeratorLooks like a valuable tool. It may be small, but it will go a long way toward improving the practical application of the single horse, exactly the reason why it should be considered for use in production logging.
Will you bring that to Athol?

As I am sitting here this morning getting ready to head to Shipshewanna, Indiana,(annual black friday horse sale) I got to wondering if it would be prudent to also put a pinpoint on the map for other locations. Locations such as Harness makers, large equipment sales, manufacturers, and other things we talk about here on DAP. Just a thought. It sure is nice to have a visual idea of where people are from.

And DAPNet events!!!! (as well as others:o)

ModeratorIn Nova Scotia they wear them when in yoke. Some say it was so the teams could be heard when working, such as teams coming and going on a logging road would need to know to get out of the way.
I know from personal experience that when there are several teams working or at a pull, all the bells add an aesthetic quality that is enjoyable. I think there could be some personal pride/enthusiasm factor too…… like headers and tail pipes on a hot rod…..:p

…..Last – try the direct link and let me know if it works for you or not. If not, note what browser you’re using as well as the version but make sure to let me know and we’ll try and remedy the problem. It’s too nice of a tool/toy to miss out on.
Worked for me with Firefox 7.0.1

Here’s that link again, in case you can’t find it. For you guys in the know, is there a button we could have that sends you to the map without having to find the link in the thread?
Yep, I think Geoff is working on that….

Is there anyone that is planning to attend this event that would like to take some pictures that we can use on our website and/or be willing to write an article about the event for our upcoming January DAPNet Newsletter? One need not have the skills of a NY Times best sellers list author, just the will and time to do it:) Little things like this can be a really huge help.
Thanks in advance,
Erika, I will have my camera with me, and will take some photos that I can share…. I can also let someone else use it as well, but I can handle the camera and lines at the same time.

How is the spruce market down your way? I could put together a couple of loads but have been reluctant to do so as the price has been quite low last I checked.
George
I’m not sure about the current prices but we were getting about $230-40/mbf on the landing. At the time it seemed like we got the best prices from M.B. Heath and Son’s in Hyde Park….. up you way. We got $320/mbf – $80/mbf trucking.

I pulled the trigger and bought the tickets. I’ll be arriving in Manchester nonstop from Denver at ~11:00p.m. (hopefully) on Friday 12/9, grab a car and then head towards Athol. My return flight is ~8:00 a.m on Monday 12/12.
First question, is there a bunkhouse, shed, barn, etc. at the site where I can stretch out my sleeping bag in the wee hours of the a.m. and not bother anyone? The same scenario would be great for Sunday evening as well if possible as I will be leaving for the airport very early. I have an offer of a place to stop midway, but if possible I’d like to keep it on each end.
Jean & Bradley, you mentioned that you might also need a chopper. I’ll have full PPE and everything I need to fell trees/work in the woods except a saw and an axe to pound wedges. MOFGA LIF last fall I used an extra 372 that Carl had and that worked OK. The offer is there if you need it…
Looking forward to it!!
Kewl Scott. This should be awesome….. I’ll have 3 saws and plenty of wedges, hammer etc.. and I do have a bit of a hard time running a saw and driving horses at the same time, so you’re welcome to use whatever you need.
Looking forward to seeing you and working together again, Carl

ModeratorI would wrap one pass around to inner bow on the nigh ox, one pass around the inner bow on the off ox, then I would hang the hook on the end of the chain on the inner bow of the nigh ox.
This is just a pic of a pair of calves I started a few years ago, but it pretty much shows it. I just had to sell these two for beef a couple of months ago, I just never got around to using them. They were a bit bigger than in this pic, 2100 & 2200#. NormandexHolstein
